A week long celebration around Joomla's
August 17th, 2025 birthday

20 Years of Joomla!

Joomla began its story on August 17th, 2005 as a fork of the open-source CMS Mambo. The split was driven by a commitment among core developers to preserve open-source values. The project quickly gained widespread support, and the name “Joomla!” was announced to the community on September 1st. Joomla! is derived from the Swahili word jumla which means “all together”.

The Future of Joomla!

This October will see the arrival of the exciting Joomla 6 as per our normal release schedule. The Joomla Academy will soon have its second cohort and Google Summer of Code 2025 will end its run by November. And in the mix of all of that there will be a great event focused on planning the longer term future of Joomla—the Joomla 8 sprint! It is a focused, in-person and partially online event scheduled for September 4–7, 2025, in Germany. The goal of this sprint is to work "all together" on defining the vision, strategy, and long-term plan for Joomla's future, particularly addressing key questions about the project’s identity, its audience, and the challenges ahead.

Yes. Joomla is quite easy of use and extensible. Its administrative backend is intuitive, with logical menus and responsive designs that make managing content, images, and other media straightforward. The Joomla core offers a plethora of features and if you need something extra, there are thousands of extensions, catering to diverse functional requirements without the need for extensive coding. The vibrant community and documentation provide a helping han when you need it.

Is Joomla extendable?

You bet! Joomla has a very strong core set of capabilities. But if you need something more, beyond its powerful core, the CMS is highly extensible and supports numerous third-party extensions: components, modules or plugins that can be installed available in the Joomla Extensions Directory. Thousands of extensions that do everything from a slick slideshow to a handling subscriptions and more. There are also thousands of templates available that are compatible with the latest version.

Is Joomla really FREE?

Absolutely! Joomla stands out due to its dual-natured concept of "free." Free as in "Costing Nothing" - It is available for anyone to download, install, and use free of charge. Free as in "Freedom to Change" - Joomla embodies freedom in a broader context due to its open-source nature. Being open-source signifies that its source code is available to the public, granting anyone the freedom to explore, modify, and extend it according to their unique vision and needs.

Is Joomla accessible?

More than ever! Joomla prioritizes accessibility, making digital content reachable to as many users as possible, including those with disabilities. Joomla 5, for instance, ushered in enhanced accessibility features, adhering to World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) guidelines. It integrates ARIA landmarks, roles, and attributes, offering better navigation experiences for screen reader users. This ongoing commitment to digital inclusivity is crucial in making the web a universally approachable space.

Does Joomla support other languages?

Definitely! One of the many fantastic features that places Joomla! in a special position among CMSs is its profound multilingual support. Joomla! supports more than 48 languages and provides a versatile platform for creating multilingual websites. Users can easily create content in multiple languages. Its robust multilingual capabilities lets developers and site administrators deliver content in a localised manner, allowing engagement of a wide, global audience—seamlessly.

Can I host my site anywhere?

Yes! Unlike some proprietary CMS platforms that might restrict you to specific hosting environments or providers, Joomla proudly stands out with its adaptability. Joomla's open-source nature means you can host your website virtually anywhere. You can opt for shared hosting, a VPS, or a dedicated server . You can select a hosting solution that aligns with your budget, technical expertise, and website needs without being restricted in providers. Don't forget to check out our hosting sponsors!

Is the 20th Anniversary shop permanent?

No, the Joomla 20th Anniversary shop hosted by Fourthwall will be temporary for the period of the Joomla 20th year celebration... As pointed out by an active Joomler, the original Joomla shop by Spreadshirt has become unsustainable in terms of pricing, shipping and coverage. After the Joomla 20th year celebration period, we will, as per Joomla's by-laws call for a RFQ for a long term replacement for the shop. This will give all interested a fair opportunity to bid to be our future shop providers.

How can I contribute and make Joomla even better?

Joomla is all volunteer based and driven so thanks to people like you, it evolves year after year. You can contribute in all sorts of ways: contribube code on GitHub, test PRs, start an in person, virtual or hybrid JUG (Joomla User Group) in your city or country, give a bit of your time in one of the more than 50 teams, sub-teams or working groups, financially sponsor the community or an event. Any and all thoughful, supportive involvement that you wish to contribute is very much appreciated!
